Finance Operations

Operations
team

Montreal, QC

Full time

Revenue. Expenses. Money in. Money out. While the money train at Transit isnโ€™t an actual train (to our considerable disappointment), our finance operation is a well-oiled machine in its own right. From payroll to invoices, payments to grants, weโ€™ve got 170+ transit agency partners, legions of Royale subscribers, and a globetrotting retinue of employees who could use your help to keep track of each loonie and toonie.

Reporting to Stรฉphanie (our Head of Finance & Operations), youโ€™ll work closely with the operations team to handle payroll, accounts receivable, and accounts payable. Youโ€™ll be surrounded by brilliant and kind colleagues who want to make sustainable transportation a joy to take, and who see the potential for cities to be turned into more beautiful, liveable spacesโ€ฆ

โ€ฆbut beautiful and liveable cities begin with beautiful and liveable spreadsheets! If youโ€™re a sustainability-minded numbers person โ€” and want to make our financial operations run like clockwork โ€” hereโ€™s what youโ€™ll handle when you clock in at Transit:

๐Ÿ“ Responsibilities

Payroll
  • Youโ€™ll run our payroll, and lend support on government compliance tasks across Canada, the US and UK

Accounts receivable
  • Youโ€™ll help us prepare invoices for approval, and issue them to customers

  • Youโ€™ll manage clientsโ€™ payment reconciliation and follow up on unpaid invoices and payment discrepancies ๐Ÿ˜ค

  • At the end of each month, youโ€™ll review monthly revenue, make sure all deals have been invoiced, and ferret out any discrepancies

  • Youโ€™ll manage our revenues bookkeeping (month-end closes, journal entries for deferred revenue and accrual, etc.)

  • Youโ€™ll help on sales tax reporting in the US

  • Youโ€™ll support our revenue operations and business teams with various sales, legal, and procurement processes (vendor set-up, payment system set-up, etc.)

Accounts payable
  • Youโ€™ll process payments for all our providers

  • Youโ€™ll approve and reimburse employee expenses in accordance with internal policies

  • Youโ€™ll keep our books in order and chase down missing invoices and receipts, like a chequebook-balancing Indiana Jones

  • Youโ€™ll ensure each invoice is booked in the right category and with the right tax code

  • Youโ€™ll manage salaries and inter-company transaction bookkeeping

  • Youโ€™ll help on grants application and expenses reporting

โœ… Requirements

  • You have 2 yearsโ€™ experience in accounting, finance or operations, (or perhaps you have a natural knack for them? Weโ€™re open to being convinced youโ€™d be great for the job!)

  • You are very comfortable speaking and writing in both French and English ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ๐ŸŒ (95% of our customers are outside of Quebec and you will need to interact with them)

  • Youโ€™ve been told โ€œhow do you stay so organized?โ€ on many occasions. (Have you given up the secret?)

  • Youโ€™re a detail-oriented kinda person who can remember which of the two different partner agencies named Mountain Line that weโ€™re supposed to invoice

  • Youโ€™re a good communicator and relish having an open line of communication with the whole team

  • Accounting software doesnโ€™t scare you (aka Quickbooks is an old friend)

  • Google Sheets doesnโ€™t scare you either

  • No task is too big or too small: youโ€™re willing to take on tasks outside of your normal day-to-day duties

  • You are proud to live in the beautifully wacky metropolis of Montreal

๐Ÿ’ฏ Would be nice if

  • Experience with CRM like Hubspot

  • Youโ€™re passionate about cities, urbanism, public transit, design, software, memeful Slack repartee

Donโ€™t feel like all the requirements apply to you but you still think youโ€™d be a great fit for Transit? Donโ€™t hesitate to apply!

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ’ป A note on diversity

Public transit is used by overwhelmingly more women and people of colour than other modes of transportation. We try to make sure the diversity of our users is reflected in the team that serves them. Because when we include people of all races, genders, sexual orientations, ages, and identities โ€” we end up building a better app for everyone who uses Transit.

We encourage candidates of all ages, genders, origins and orientations to apply. If youโ€™d like to specify which pronouns you use, feel free to include that in your application email.

And if your lived experience has given you a unique perspective on all things transportation, mobility, accessibility, urbanism? Let us know, and weโ€™ll make sure your application gets the attention it merits.

๐Ÿ“ฌ How to apply

Send us an email at [email protected] with your resume, a quick summary about your relevant experience and why youโ€™re interested in working at Transit before March 20th. We look forward to meeting you!

PS: When you apply, let us know how you heard about the position! Whispers, grapevines, middle-of-the-night Google searches? Weโ€™re dying to know.

PPS: Unfortunately, we don't accept in-person applications or singing telegrams. Make your application sing instead!
